The Fall of the Wall in Berlin happened 20 years ago and the whole city can relate to the slogan “20 Years since the fall of the Wall – 20 years of change in Berlin”.
Even if the 9th of November 1989 happened further back in time, today every second inhabitant still refuses to move back into the other part of the city. The question is: why? People over 50 would not be particularly ready to leave their part of Berlin. However, according to a poll the majority of people living in Berlin think that the city’s development is really positive and they like their homes. Although Berlin changes as a metropolis quite fast, many habitants stick by their habits.
The Wall still seems to be in the mental “back room” of the people. In this regard it does not matter if you ask someone from East-/ or West Berlin. Only 50% of people from West Berlin would agree to move to the east and vice-versa.
Overcoming the wall is a symbol of a fresh start in Germany as well as in Europe and this year it will be celebrated with a big festival in front of Brandenburger Tor.
The Highlight of this event will be the representation of the Fall of the Wall with huge dominos. Numerous teenagers are going to take care of the history side of things, as well as design the blocks which are supposed to form the “Domino Gallery”, which is going to be 2km long, starting on the 7th November. The small works of art will be 2.5 metres tall, and these will be painted with different ideas concerning the theme “Fall of the Wall” and the historical background. The blocks will follow the former direction of the Wall between Reichstag, Brandenburger Tor and Potsdamer Platz and they will be knocked down on 9th November with the help of artists and politicians.
Many museums and other arrangements will also be involved in the theme in the form of expositions or commemorations.
Whoever wants to witness this memorable event should try to reserve a Ferienwohnung in Berlin as soon as possible because there are a lot of visitors expected.
Since January an info box in Potsdamer Platz has already shown the change in Berlin in the years after the Fall of the Wall. With an adequate Unterkunft Berlin you can take part in the ceremony and also enjoy a short break in Berlin.
