People vacationing in Connecticut, as well as the natives, understand that the state has a long history of seafaring, from trading to whaling and more. Perhaps the best place to get a real sense of the connection to the sea is at The Museum of America and the Sea, located in Mystic, Connecticut. This maritime historical museum offers an incredible look at the sailing vessels, the people who sailed them, and those who lived in the seafaring villages of more than a hundred years ago. This museum was founded in 1929, and has a number of amazing artifacts, including actual sailing vessels. The Preservation Shipyard gives visitors a close look at just how these old sailing ships were made. Today, people in the shipyard build ships with the same techniques their ancestors used. You can also visit the 19th century seafaring village, which contains 30 original buildings gathered from around New England. Walking along the streets in the village is like stepping back in time. Check out the Boardman School and the Geo H. Stone General Store. Kids will enjoy the planetarium that is available as well. In fact, the whole family will have a good time exploring the museum and grounds.
