Lobsters are a large part of the seafood industry. In fact Clawed Lobsters, or what we would normally refer to as Maine Lobsters or North Eastern Lobsters all by themselves are a significant portion of the 1.8 Billion dollar seafood market.
It might come as a surprise that the seafood market is so huge. Coming close to 2 Billion is not an easy task. There are however several good reasons for this:
1. Lobster are incredibly tasty little critters.
2. Not only are they tasty, but Lobster are also very healthy. They have little to no fat and are high in protein.
3. They are readily available in the US.
4. They are also a renewable crop, due to limitations on the time they can be caught as well as the which ones can be kept, the live lobster market is thriving.
The biggest factor is the taste. There are not many seafood dishes that top a properly prepared Maine or New England Lobster. Steamed to perfection and then dipped into melted butter, truly a taste of heaven!
When you have a chance, the next time you are able to enjoy some tasty seafood, consider skipping the tuna filet, or the crab stuffed mushrooms and head straight for the king of the sea - the live lobster.
